Jhumpa Lahiri has been selected for the prestigious American award – 2014 National Humanities Medal. She would be given this medal by none other than the USA President, Obama.

What is National Humanities Medal?

It is an American award that gives annual recognition to several people, institutions or groups that have helped in deepening of the nation’s understanding of humanities. These medals are usually conferred by the US President.

Why Jhumpa?

According to the White House, Lahiri illuminates the Indian-American experience in beautiful narratives. Also, she is being presented the award for enlarging human story.

The scheme has been a long-standing demand of over 2 million ex-servicemen in the country. It seeks to ensure that a uniform pension is paid to the defence personnel who retire at the same rank with the same length of service, irrespective of their dates of retirement.

In a bid to end the logjam on the issue of the ‘One Rank One Pension’ article, the government has broadly accepted the burning issue which was pending for 4 decades. The package will kick in from July 2014 and use 2013 as the base year for calculations.

This teachers’ day, we spoke to some of our readers and they shared some of their interesting stories with us:

1.

I was a small town girl participating in the dance competition at the state level. Seeing so many smart kids, I was scared to even go up on the stage. My teacher who was accompanying me patted my back, looked me in the eye and said, “You are the best.” Her voice gave me such encouragement, I went up there and killed it.

2.

My parents pressurized me to take Science stream even though I wanted to study commerce. Chemistry was my weakest point. I could not remember the names of the chemicals, leave alone the periodic table. And then after a couple of class tests with zero marks, my teacher called me to her cabin and handed me a poem made on the names of chemicals in the periodic table. I still remember them.

3.

I was a heartbroken teenager under the claws of first love. I became a gunda and did not study. I must be in the 9th standard back then. My principal called me and I was expecting a heavy punishment. Surprisingly, I did not get any punishment. Instead he told me that unless I become something of my own, no girl’s family will ever let her be with you. It was a simple advice, but it came from someone I expected the least. It’s been 6 years, I am still dating that girl.

4.

I was made to sweep the corridors and I felt pretty bad about it. Then I was called to my principle’s office and I thought, I am so dead now. But my principal gave me the sixth Harry Potter book as he knew I was a big fan. The 6th Harry Potter book had recently released and only four books were ordered for the school library. Yet somehow he gave me one. I was elated!

5.

Once during our exams, a teacher was walking through the corridors invigilating the classrooms. Suddenly a monkey jumped at her out of nowhere and she started screaming. She ran inside our classroom, and frantically closed the door. She was scared and the rest of the teachers were laughing on her. We, on the other hand, used the distraction to cheat. I did pass that exam.

6.

I liked to sing, but I would not call it my passion. My hobby, probably. But my teacher changed my perception of who I was. He would make me sing randomly in the assembly or in the class. He asked me to focus on my solo performances and gave me the confidence to sing on the stage. Once he pushed me on the stage, there was no stopping me. And it’s because of him that I went on to win the first prize in a National Level competition.

7.

Once during a school function in the auditorium, the chief guest asked us the name of the US President’s wife. Since the students did not know, one of the teachers sitting in the corner whispered the answer to someone. I heard it and replied loudly. I was called in front of everyone. He praised me and asked me how did I know it. And I pointed towards my teacher sitting in the corner. She was so embarrassed.

8.

I learned my biggest ever lesson from my class teacher who taught me to live life on my own terms with the simplest message that she could give. The day I learned to be comfortable in my skin, there was no stopping me.

9.

Once my uncle came to pick me up from school during half day. My teacher asked me why did I have to leave early and I made a sad face and said, “I am not well madam.” She had the slip that her uncle got issued from the office. She that and slapped me. It had the real reason written on it which said, ‘family function.’

10.

A bunch of noisy kids were making a ruckus while sitting behind me in the class. My class teacher got angry and he thought I was the one who did it. He sent me out of the class. I tried explaining, but he didn’t listen. While I was standing outside, someone told him it wasn’t me. He called me back in, but I refused to move as I felt insulted. He brought me in the class anyway and apologised in front of the whole class. That day I learned the biggest lesson of my life, “you are never too big to accept your mistake.”

Every 90’s kid is familiar with the works of Akshay Kumar. He has managed to carry that swag for decades now, while being popular as a jack of all trades.

He has made us laugh in Hera Pheri and cry in Namaste London. He proved himself to be a villain to fall in love with in Ajnabi and Special 26 and a hero of all sorts in Baby and OMG. He showed that he is a director’s actor, give him any role and he would mould himself in it.

This hero did not become a superstar overnight. His journey had to see several days of struggle before stardom touched his feet.

Episode 1: Puttar Punjabi

Born to Punjabi parents in Amritsar, Punjab, Akshay Kumar was originally named Rajiv Bhatia. He spent early days of his life in Chandni Chowk, Delhi and later moved to Mumbai with his family from where he did his schooling. When he was in 7th standard, he got bashed from his dad for getting poor marks. Akshay meekly told his dad that he wanted to be an actor. Finally, this black belt in Taekwondo, dropped out of college and moved to Bangkok to learn martial arts. He wanted to get more advanced training, but his financial status could only allow him to go to Bangkok.

In Bangkok, he learned the combat sport, Muay Thai. To survive himself he worked as a waiter and a chef. Those were his days of struggle when he put himself out there to be able to pursue his passion. He would even buy jewellery from Bangkok and sell them in India to get himself some money. His favorite actor during those days was Dharmendra and he really wanted to be something like him. After he completed his training in Bangkok, he returned to India and opened his own training classes.

In India, Akshay met Jayesh Seth, a photographer and got himself clicked while doing a stunt. The picture turned out well. Akshay decided to try his luck in modelling. He had long hair, a moustache and looked nowhere close to the tall, dark and handsome man that he is today. Yet, he got a few modelling projects through some good pictures. He made more money from that project in 2-days than his month’s salary. But right before the shoot of an important advertisement, Akshay missed the flight and was told he will never become big in the industry. Heartbroken, Akshay finally decided to try his luck in Bollywood.

Episode 4: Rajiv Bhatia to Akshay Kumar

Akshay saw a lot of rejections and days of anonymity. His first screen appearance was an uncredited martial art instructor in Mahesh Bhatt’s Aaj in 1987. Then after his initial few flops, he got his break with Abbas Mastaan’s Khiladi which launched him with the screen name Akshay Kumar. The Khiladi films went on to make eight films with the last on being Khiladi 786 in 2012. Akshay worked for as many as 15 films in a year while doing his own stunts in many of them and most of them turning out to be a blockbuster.

Episode 5: Of movies and marriage

Akshay once said to TOI saying, “Every man’s ultimate dream is to marry the woman he loves. But for me, marrying a woman born to a world I could only dream about…was something else.” In 2001, Akshay Kumar got married to Twinkle Khanna. Both of them had earlier worked in films together and had acclaimed great success for themselves. Akshay, however, had to meet and be accepted by a lot people on Twinkle’s side including politician Amit Shah who is a family friend of Khanna’s before his dream of marrying Twinkle Khanna could come true.

Episode 6: Roots of the riches

He was appreciated by Al Pacino himself for his roles. He was declared the 9th highest paid actor in the Forbes list that recently came out. His success did not take his humility away from him. He became an integral part of campaign ‘We The People‘ to raise awareness about global goals. He even contributes to various charities and trusts including Salman Khan’s Being Human initiative. He has a lot of films lined up in the future and many of them in progress in his own production house Hari Om (on his father’s name).

Despite his success, he never lost touch with his roots. He is a protective father, a responsible husband and a terrific actor. Do we need more reasons to love him?

They reportedly called the passengers as “Chavs” (a derogatory British term for a young lower-class person who displays brash and loutish behaviour and wears real or imitation designer clothes). Apparently the employees didn’t know that FB posts can be read by their employers too. I guess they found it the hard way.
